Serves: 8

Cook time: 1h 30min

Difficulty: medium

Ingredients

  • 600g puff pastry, divided into two equal portions
  • Zest and juice of 1 orange
  • 6 large apples, peeled and diced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar

Step-by-step

1

Start by preparing the filling. Peel and dice the apples, then zest and juice the orange.

2

Combine the diced apples, orange zest, orange juice, sugar, and 1/4 cup of water.

3

Separately, combine the cornstarch with water, mix well, and set aside for now.

4

Simmer the apple filling for 15 minutes over medium to low heat, stirring occasionally.

5

Once the sauce has reduced by half, add the cornstarch mixture to the apple filling and continue stirring for another minute or until the sauce thickens. Then remove from the heat and let it cool completely.

6

While the apple filling is cooling down, lay half of the puff pastry on a buttered and floured pie pan and pierce it with a fork. Keep the pie pan in the fridge until the apple filling is ready to use.

7

Once the apple filling has completely cooled, pour it over the puff pastry in the pan.

8

Next, use the other half of the puff pastry, cut into 1.5cm wide strips, and cover the top of the apple pie in a braided pattern.

9

Place the assembled pie in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes at 374°F (190°C), or until the pastry is golden brown.

10

Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before dusting it with powdered sugar.

11

Slice the apple pie and serve warm or cold; it tastes amazing both ways.
